Being widowed in her early thirties wasn’t something Risper had ever imagined—nobody expects it. When her husband of five years died, she poured herself fully into the businesses they had started. She had a career, and her husband ran the businesses.
After his passing, she tried hiring someone to run them, but they started going under. It felt like the businesses were her remaining connection to her husband, so she quit her job and focused on them.
Risper had a lethal work ethic. Her grind helped grow the businesses beyond her wildest dreams. She wished her husband had been around to see what she’d done. As she was grieving, many people told her she was still very young and that she should remarry if she found someone.
Well, someone did find her. Pete was his name. They met in church. It started with small talk here and there. Later that year, there was a business conference. Both Pete and Risper attended. Pete was elated to see her there. Since they were already familiar with each other, they spent the day together.
Risper hadn’t spent that much time with a man since her husband’s death. It was a welcome experience. She also liked that he sounded like he knew a lot about business. She dealt with electronics while Pete was in agribusiness.
One day together turned into lunch dates and coffee dates, and they even started attending church together. They started dating about a year later. It didn’t take long before things started changing.
Risper’s business was doing way better than Pete’s. That wasn’t a problem for her because, when they started off with her husband, her salary was the backup plan in case things didn’t pick up. They operated as a team, so she expected the same with Pete. She was wrong.
Pete told her it was emasculating for her to make more than he did. The solution was for her to bring him into the business. She was willing to teach him everything she knew. After all, they were a couple. Pete’s addition to the business came with many negative changes.
Risper’s employees hated him. He was bossy and rude. Many of them had worked with her deceased husband and remained loyal to him, which further increased the friction. After a few weeks in the business, Pete began to feel like he could make changes. It led to arguments with Risper.
It was decided that Pete would run one of the branches to keep the peace. Meanwhile, their relationship seemed to be getting more serious. Everybody in their church knew about them. Pete was well-loved in that community, so they sang his praises. Risper had joined that church community after her husband’s passing, so she took their approval of him as a green flag.
Risper and her deceased husband hadn’t been fortunate enough to have kids before his passing, and she hoped that would change with Pete. It was one of the things they had discussed while planning their future.
When Pete took over one of the business branches, he brought in new clients and made deals on his own. Then he started siphoning money from the branch into his agribusiness. The weather was bad, and his harvest was ruined. It began as a temporary measure, but the issue got out of hand.
Risper couldn’t understand why that branch was losing money, and turnover was also high. Pete lied and got defensive. She tried talking to the employees who had left, and they all warned her about Pete. She was in love with him, but she could also tell something was off. Pete’s mess got so ugly because one of the deals he had made was with the church. He couldn’t deliver, and they got kicked out of that church.
Risper offered to fix the issue, but even though she did it at a loss to her, their reputation was already tarnished. Pete ran down the branch Risper had entrusted him with. They fought over the matter for weeks. Then the issue spilt over to Risper’s other branches. Her employees were poached, and some left because they felt it was a sinking ship.
Pete still had a hold of her because he dragged her into another church. He was very loud about their business success. He also told the pastor about how they were hoping to conceive. It was as though Risper was under a spell because she soon found herself taking almost everything she earned to this church. The rest, she gave to Pete.
Her family tried intervening, but they were no match for the influence love and brainwashing had on her. When the businesses were run down entirely, Pete disappeared—gone with the wind. Risper buried herself deeper into the new church that Pete had introduced her to. With no income, she started selling off her assets. When her family got wind of what was happening, they sought legal recourse to stop her. They couldn’t, but the legal battles prevented her from selling everything. They hoped it would give them enough time to get back on her feet.
Meanwhile, Risper resorted to selling even her household items. There was no reasoning with her. Then she fell ill. Of course, her first step was going to church for healing. It didn’t work. As she was going about her day, she collapsed and was taken to the hospital. Her family got the call. Scared the church members would show up, they moved her to another hospital.
The seclusion from that world helped. It wasn’t without a fightback from Risper, but eventually, she cut ties with that world. Establishing herself was going to be an uphill task, but she had her family’s support.
