Kakamega High School has been crowned as the 2026 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Boys’ Football Champions after edging St. Mary’s Yala 3-2 in extra time.
2026 KSSSA Term Two National Games ran from August 2 to August 6 and featured schools across the country competing in 14 disciplines, including football, volleyball, netball, rugby sevens, basketball, hockey, cricket and volleyball.
Also, St. Joseph’s Girls Kitale claimed their first-ever national football title after defeating Nyakach Girls on penalties.
The green commandos are now 15-time KSSSA champions in the country. Both winners now proceed to the next championship.
Kakamega School Edge St. Mary’s Yala in Dramatic Extra-Time Final
The boys’ final lived up to expectations, with Kakamega School making a bright start by taking an early lead against St. Mary’s Yala.
The Nyanza Region champions responded in spectacular fashion with a brilliant free-kick to level the scores at 1-1 before completing the comeback to move 2-1 ahead during the second half.
Kakamega School, however, refused to surrender and found a crucial equalizer in the 80th minute to make it 2-2, sending the contest into extra time after neither side could find a winner in regulation time.
In the 100th minute, Kakamega School struck again to restore their advantage at 3-2, holding the lead in the remainder of extra time to seal victory and lift the coveted national trophy.
The victory now adds another national football title to Kakamega School, who have now won it 15 times.
St. Joseph’s Girls Kitale Win their First National Football Title
Earlier in the day, St. Joseph’s Girls Kitale were crowned the 2026 KSSSA National Girls’ Football Champions after overcoming Nyakach Girls in a tense final.
The match ended 1-1 in regular time before proceeding to a penalty shootout, where St. Joseph’s Girls Kitale won the shootout.
The result marked a historic achievement for the Trans Nzoia-based school with their first-ever football victory.
Nyakach Girls finished as runners-up after another strong performance throughout the national competition.
2026 National Playoff Results
Before the final matches, Archbishop Njenga Girls secured third place in the girls’ competition after a commanding 4-0 victory over Raila Education Center.
In the boys’ third-place playoff, Menengai High School defeated Takaba Mixed Day 3-2 to finish the tournament in third position.
The 2026 KSSSA Term Two National Games were hosted in Kiambu County at the M-Pesa Foundation Academy, serving as the main venue for the week-long championship.
The competition now proceeds to the 2026 Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) Games, which will be held in Morogoro, Tanzania, from August 12 to August 23.
The regional competition will be staged primarily at the Morogoro Teachers College (MOTCO), while cricket matches will be played at the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA).
Before departing for Tanzania, the Kenyan teams that qualified through the national championships will remain in Thika for a joint training camp from August 8 to August 10 as they prepare to represent the country at the East African tournament.
