Siaya Senator and ODM party leader Oburu Oginga has addressed concerns over his health after reports of his recent hospital visit sparked speculation among Kenyans.
Oburu said he is in good health and only visited the hospital briefly for a general check-up with his doctors before returning home. He also dismissed concerns that the visit should be a cause for alarm, saying illness is a normal human experience.
“I had only briefly visited the hospital for a general check-up with my doctors and have since returned home. Being sick is a normal human experience and should not alarm anyone. The day I am truly sick, I will inform you all, for I am a very transparent person,” said Oburu.
Oburu Says He Is Well After Hospital Visit
In his statement on September 1, Oburu said he had only briefly been at the hospital for a general check-up with his doctors and had since returned home.
The veteran politician said he had seen reports in the digital media and wanted to assure the public that he was doing well.
He also sought to play down concerns about hospital treatment, noting that illness is a normal human experience and should not automatically cause alarm.
Oburu said he would personally inform Kenyans if he were genuinely unwell, stressing that he considers himself transparent.
His remarks came after reports that he had been readmitted to Nairobi Hospital.
Senator Dismisses Reports of Readmission
Oburu challenged reports that he had been readmitted, questioning whether the people spreading the information had spoken to him.
He further said that he received several visitors during his hospital stay, including government officials. Among them was Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi.
According to reports, on Tuesday, visitors had been restricted to Oburu’s close family members, renewing speculation about the ODM leader’s health.
Other reports had suggested that Oburu was receiving treatment in Nairobi and that his family was considering specialized medical care in the UK.
Oburu’s Previous Health Episodes
The latest episode comes against a background of previous public interest in Oburu’s health. The veteran politician has previously been hospitalized for medical treatment, during which the claims about his health were later dismissed.
In November 2022, Oburu traveled to Yashoda Hospital in Hyderabad, India, where he underwent surgery for a longstanding knee problem. He later spoke publicly about the procedure and his recovery.
In 2025, following the death of his brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Oburu’s absence from public life also generated speculation about his health. His family explained that his trip to Dubai was a short sabbatical and not a hospitalization.
Recently, Oburu was admitted to Nairobi Hospital in August 2026 and later confirmed his discharge and recovery at home.
