Billionaire businessman Elon Musk says SpaceX company has closed $40 billion in debt financing to purchase graphics processing units, or GPUs, for its artificial intelligence (AI) operations that he says will accelerate the race to build AI computing capacity.

Musk on Sunday, October 25, said the financing will increase investment opportunities for Space X as well as drive its business diversity.

“SpaceX closed $40B of debt for GPUs, but we’re investment grade and have Starlink and launch revenue,” Musk said, noting that his firm stands a chance to get the “chips” financing because it is not dependent on AI alone, but also generates revenue through Starlink satellite internet and rocket launch businesses.

GPUs are advanced chips that provide the computing power needed to train and operate AI systems.

“This is primarily callable debt for GPU purchases that will arrive in Q1 and Q2,” Musk said in X post, pointing that the GPUs will arrive in the first half of 2027.

“Not a major factor this quarter,” he says.
