The government has introduced a new option allowing Hustler Fund borrowers to repay their outstanding loans using Safaricom Bonga Points.

In text messages sent to borrowers, the Hustler Fund notified users that they can now repay their outstanding loans using Bonga Points to increase their borrowing limits.

“Repay your outstanding Hustler Fund Loan using Bonga Points to increase limit…” the text message read in part.

The SMS directs borrowers to dial *254# to access the service. Users are then presented with the option to repay using either M-PESA or Bonga Points.

This new feature appears in the latest Hustler Fund repayment menu, where users can choose either M-PESA or Bonga Points as their preferred source of funds.

How to Repay Hustler Fund Loans Using Safaricom Bonga Points

Here’s a practical step‑by‑step process to follow;

  1. Dial 254# and open the Hustler Fund menu
    From your Safaricom line, dial 254# and wait for the Hustler Fund main menu to appear. Ensure you are using the same number that has the outstanding loan.
  2. Select “Repay Loan”
    From the main options (Check Limit, Request Loan, Repay Loan, etc.), choose 3. Repay Loan (or the equivalent “Repayment” option).
  3. Choose “Pay for Self” or “Pay for Other”
    Select 1. Pay for Self if you are repaying your own loan. If you are paying for someone else, choose 2. Pay for Other and enter their phone number and ID number when prompted.
  4. Look for the Bonga Points payment option
    After entering the amount (full or partial), the system should show available payment options. If your line is eligible and the feature is active, you will see an option such as “Lipa na Bonga Points” or “Pay with Bonga Points”. Select that option.
  5. Confirm amount and points conversion
    The screen will display:
  • The loan amount you are repaying
  • The number of Bonga Points that will be deducted (roughly 5 points = KSh 1)
    Confirm that the shilling amount and points deduction are correct before proceeding.
  1. Authorize with your M‑Pesa PIN
    You will be asked to enter your M‑Pesa PIN to authorize the transaction. This confirms you agree to convert your Bonga Points and apply them to your Hustler Fund loan. Do not share your PIN with anyone.
  2. Wait for SMS confirmation
    After processing, you will receive an SMS from Safaricom/Hustler Fund showing:
  • Amount repaid
  • Bonga Points deducted
  • Remaining loan balance (if any)
    Keep this message as your proof of payment.

The latest repayment option comes after the Hustler Fund began sending reminders encouraging borrowers to make regular partial payments.

The reminders encourage borrowers to make consistent repayments to maintain a good repayment record, which can influence their borrowing limits under the scheme.

“Did you know? Making partial payments regularly helps maintain a healthy Hustler Fund rating. Dial 254# to pay KSh 300 today on Hustler Fund,” the message reads.
