I&M Group has officially launched its 2025 Sustainability Report. The report outlines an ambitious roadmap to integrate sustainability directly into the institution’s core strategy, governance, risk management, and lending operations across Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, and Mauritius.
At the center of the newly released document is a baseline pledge: to positively impact more than 50 million lives across the region by 2030 through inclusive economic growth and environmental stewardship.
The official launch took place at the Ngong Road Forest Sanctuary, combining policy declarations with practical community engagement. It was marked alongside a Kenya Forest Service community walk and the formal handover of the Ngong Road Forest Project, supported by the I&M Foundation.
“Our 2025 Sustainability Report is both an accountability milestone and a statement about the kind of institution we want to become,” said Kihara Maina, Regional CEO of I&M Group. “As we grow across the region, we want that growth to expand economic opportunity, strengthen the resilience of our customers and communities, and contribute to a more sustainable future.”
A central pillar of I&M Group’s forward-looking strategy is responsible finance. The institution plans to scale up financing for sustainable initiatives, including renewable energy projects, climate-smart agriculture, and green infrastructure. Crucially, the group intends to guide its corporate and retail clientele, especially micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), in navigating emerging environmental risks while identifying new green market opportunities.
Beyond environmental resilience, the report underscores inclusive growth. I&M plans to expand tailored financial products for MSMEs, female entrepreneurs, youth, and historically underserved communities. By widening access to capital and financial resources, the institution aims to drive job creation and build long-term financial stability across its operating markets.
These commercial efforts will be complemented by the I&M Foundation, which will continue targeted investments in education, vocational skills development, economic empowerment, and conservation projects, including ongoing forestry and mangrove restoration initiatives.
The launch signals a deeper structural shift within the banking group. To support its 2030 target, I&M is enhancing its internal oversight of environmental and social risks, refining its metrics for tracking impact, and aligning its disclosures with evolving regulatory frameworks.
By improving transparency, the group aims to provide shareholders, regulators, and customers with a clear, measurable view of how ESG considerations drive its commercial strategy.
“The report provides a foundation from which we can set clearer priorities, improve how we measure progress, and remain accountable for the outcomes we deliver,” Maina added. “Our credibility will not be determined by the commitments we make today, but by our ability to translate them into consistent and measurable action across our five markets.”
