Police in Athi River are investigating the murder of a matatu driver whose body was found lying next to a bridge in Sofia Slum, within Athi River Township, Machakos County, early Monday.

The incident happened just days after another man died under mysterious circumstances in the same sub-county.

Police said the driver was killed in Sofia Slum at about 5:30 am.

His body was discovered near a bridge within the slum by passersby. The deceased is said to have been an employee of a local matatu sacco operating in the area.

The incident was reported at Athi River Police Station as a murder case.

Eyewitnesses said the body had severe physical injuries.

"We suspect the deceased, a known matatu driver, had left his house within the slum and was on his way to work when he was hacked to death," an eyewitness told The Star.

Officers from Athi River Police Station, accompanied by their DCI counterparts, visited the scene, processed and documented it before moving the body to Shalom Community Hospital mortuary.

DCI Athi River has launched investigations into the murder.

The killing comes barely days after a 40-year-old man died under mysterious circumstances in neighbouring Inter County village within the same sub-county.

The death was reported at Athi River Police Station on October 29, 2026, by a close relative who lives in Inter County.

The relative told police that he visited his brother, Amisi Ntabo, on Tuesday at around 8:00 pm and found him complaining of stomachache and diarrhoea.

He tried to manage his brother's condition at home, but it deteriorated. He rushed him to Inter County Hospital, where he was given first aid before being referred to Athichem Hospital in Athi River.

Amisi died while undergoing treatment at around 10:00 am on Wednesday. The cause of death is yet to be established.

The scene was visited and processed by the duty officer, DCI Athi River and CSI Kitengela teams. The body was moved to Shalom Community Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Both incidents are under investigation by DCI Athi River.

Elsewhere, in Kalama Sub-County, two cows valued at Sh70,000 were stolen from a homestead in Lower Kimutwa village, Kimutwa Location.

The incident was reported at Konza Police Station at 9:20 am on Friday by Jackson Mbithi, 58, a resident of the village located about 7km south of the station.

Mbithi told police that he woke up as usual at around 6:30 am and proceeded to the cowshed to milk his two cows, both black and grey in colour, only to find them missing.

Police officers from Konza Police Station visited the scene and confirmed the theft. They established that a barbed wire fence had been cut to gain entry into and out of the cowshed.

The scene was processed and documented.

The case is under investigation, with OCS Konza handling the matter.
