As global account-to-account (A2A) payment volumes surge toward an estimated 5.8 trillion transactions by 2028, a 160% jump from 2024, Visa has announced a major upgrade to its security suite. The company has rolled out an enhanced version of A2A Protect, a tool engineered to deliver real-time risk insights that enable banks to intercept fraudulent transfers before funds ever leave a customer’s account.
At the core of this upgrade is a novel unified fraud score, marking Visa’s first in-market integration of technology from Featurespace. The solution pairs advanced artificial intelligence with transfer learning, giving financial institutions immediate access to global risk intelligence from day one. Unlike traditional fraud models that require months of in-house transaction history or extensive bank consortiums to build baseline intelligence, A2A Protect works out of the box to flag suspicious behavior.
“Fraudsters move fast across payment types, and financial institutions need risk insights just as quickly, without slowing down legitimate payments,” said Walter Lironi, Senior Vice President and Head of Value-Added Services for Visa CEMEA. “A2A Protect combines Visa’s network expertise with Featurespace’s technology to deliver a powerful new layer of protection that helps financial institutions detect more fraud, earlier.”
Key features
- Unified Fraud Scoring: Harnesses Featurespace tech to provide faster, clearer risk signals, significantly lowering false positives and unnecessary customer alerts.
- Network-Level Intelligence: Banks that opt in to ecosystem data sharing gain visibility into coordinated scam hotspots and cross-institution fraud schemes that are nearly impossible for a single bank to detect independently.
- Streamlined Integration: Deploys via a single API, minimizing implementation friction and setup time for existing banking infrastructure.
- Plain-Language Explanations: Accompanies every alert with clear contextual explanations for why a transaction was flagged, allowing fraud analysts to act swiftly without harming the experience of legitimate account holders.
By combining real-time AI modeling with cross-network visibility, Visa aims to provide financial institutions with a proactive defense against evolving digital scam tactics before transaction authorization takes place.
