Inspector Kenneth Kipkemboi Sang, who was apprehended in connection with the murders of lawyer Kyalo Mbobu and Dr Victoria Mutiso at the Milimani Chief Magistrate’s Court on Monday

Detectives have secured 14 days to hold Inspector Kenneth Kipkemboi Sang as they investigate the murders of Dr Victoria Mutiso and city lawyer Kyalo Mbobu, with forensic evidence linking a firearm issued to him to one of the killings.

Senior Principal Magistrate Paul Mutai ordered Sang to be remanded at Kilimani Police Station after granting an application by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), filed through the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

According to the application, Sang was arrested in Eldoret on October 24 after investigators traced him forensically. He was transferred to Kilimani Police Station the following day.

The investigation centres on the fatal shooting of Dr Mutiso, the former director of the African Institute of Mental and Brain Health, who was killed on July 29 in Upper Hill while inside a vehicle, registration number KDJ 609D.

Investigators told the court that ballistic examinations linked a recovered Mini Jericho pistol, serial number 47302127, to cartridge cases and bullet fragments collected at the scene. Records, they said, showed the firearm had been issued to Sang.

The DCI has also linked Sang to the September 2025 murder of Mbobu, alleging that he planned the killing. He is expected to be charged alongside other suspects who have already been arraigned before the High Court.

In seeking continued detention, investigators argued that Sang could flee, citing claims that he deserted his work station after the killings and went into hiding.

“The respondent is a flight risk as he deserted his work station after the heinous crime and had gone into hiding,” the DCI stated in its application.

The detectives also warned that releasing him could expose the investigation to risks of collusion, flight or the concealment and destruction of evidence, particularly because other suspected participants remain at large.

They sought 14 days to interrogate Sang and record his statement, conduct searches and make possible recoveries, process him before charging him, and take him to hospital for a mental assessment ahead of plea-taking.

Investigators further told the court that Mutiso had reported an earlier confrontation near Junction Mall along Ngong Road, where two armed men on a motorcycle allegedly pointed a gun at her.

She escaped and reported the incident at Kilimani Police Station under Occurrence Book number 63/07/07/2026.

The two murders have been linked to an ongoing Sh1.5 billion property dispute. Several suspects have already been arraigned in connection with the cases.

Politician and businesswoman Rose Mbithe Mulwa, the former wife of Mutiso’s husband, and her children, Chris Mulwa and Angela Mulwa, have been arraigned in both cases.

Other police officers facing charges include Constables Julius Kipkoech Cheruiyot and Kennedy Kipkemei Borboroi, who are charged over Mbobu’s killing, and Constable Elijah Kibelion Kimoi, who was arraigned and remanded over Mutiso’s fatal shooting.

The cases are before the Milimani High Court under case number HCCRC E004/2026 and the Kibra High Court under HCCRC E019/2026.
