Residents of Chesumei Constituency, Nandi County, are set to benefit from a Sh700 million tarmac road project expected to ease transport challenges and boost agricultural productivity.

The 12-kilometre Masaba-Chepterit-Belekenya road was launched Monday in a groundbreaking ceremony marked by excavators, as residents turned up to witness the start of construction.

Speaking during the launch, Chesumei Member of Parliament (MP) Paul Biego said the road will open up the interior parts of the constituency and ease movement of farm produce to markets.

Biego said farmers in Masaba, Chepterit and Belekenya have for years struggled to transport their produce due to the poor state of the road, especially during the rainy season.

“This is a gift from President William Ruto to the people of Chesumei. Farmers have been suffering because of this road. Once complete, it will reduce transport costs and connect our farmers to markets,” Biego said.

He said the project, estimated to cost about Sh700 million, will improve connectivity, spur trade and enhance access to essential services, including schools and health facilities.

The legislator urged the contractor to adhere to quality standards and deliver the project within the stipulated timelines, adding, “We ask the supervisor and the contractor to ensure the work is completed on time and that we get value for money.”

Biego praised the Kenyan Kwanza administration for its development record, citing heavy investment in infrastructure and recruitment of teachers.

“Since President William Ruto came into power, Kenyans have witnessed a lot of development, including employment of enough teachers unlike previous regimes. This road is part of that transformation,” he said.

The MP said the president deserves a second term to finish his development agenda, rallying his constituents to support the bid.

According to the contractor’s representative, Charles Korir, the project is expected to be completed within the next two years.

“We will ensure we do quality work and complete the project within the two-year period,” he assured.

Local leaders present at the launch said the road will be a game-changer for Chesumei, which relies heavily on agriculture, including maize, dairy and horticultural farming.

They said improved road infrastructure will not only reduce post-harvest losses but also attract investors and improve land value in the area.

The Masaba-Chepterit-Belekenya road is among several road projects lined up in Nandi County, under the national government’s infrastructure programme, aimed at opening up rural areas and enhancing inter-county connectivity.
