A Nairobi court has authorized police to detain actress Regina Wambui Gitau, popularly known as Regina Re, and three other relatives for 10 days in connection with the brutal murder of her 86-year-old mother, Dorita Lasinder Macharia, in Loresho, Nairobi.
The detention was granted on Monday, November 2, 2026, to allow investigators more time to complete their inquiry into the killing that has shocked the entertainment industry.
Ms Gitau, who is widely known for hosting the popular game show “Who’s Smarter Now?” from 1999 to 2006, was presented in court alongside the three relatives. Police told the court they needed more time to conduct forensic examinations, record witness statements and piece together the circumstances surrounding the death of Ms. Macharia.
The prosecution argued that the 10-day custodial period was necessary due to the seriousness of the offence and to prevent interference with ongoing investigations.
According to police, the body of the 86-year-old was found at her home in Loresho, an upmarket suburb in the capital Nairobi.
The details surrounding the murder have not yet been made public by investigators.
The court allowed the application, ordering that the four suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue. They are expected to be arraigned once investigations are complete.
Ms. Gitau rose to national prominence in the early 2000s as the face of one of Kenya’s first interactive television quiz shows, becoming a household name during her seven-year run on the program.
Police have not disclosed the identities of the other three relatives detained alongside her.
Investigations are ongoing.
