Four suspects arrested in Kitui town on suspicion of transformer vandalism have been booked at Kitui Police Station, and their vehicle impounded.

Douglas Kyalo Mbuvi, Joseph Mulei Musovo, Benson Muchiri Kaburia and Peter Musyimi Keli were jointly arrested on Wednesday, September 16, by police and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers.

“The four were in a motor vehicle with concealed number plates when they were ordered by the security agencies to stop,” Kenya Power said.

According to Kenya Power, one drum of copper winding and other items including assorted spanners, hacksaw, panga, and a hammer were found “upon searching the vehicle.’

The suspects led the team to Kamuungu Primary School where they had vandalised a 35kva transformer, and Kangweni village, where they had vandalised a 200Kva and a 100Kva transformers.

Explosion of transformer vandalism causes widespread power blackouts and heavy financial losses for Kenya Power, with government figures showing that 110 transformers valued at KSh 137 million were lost between September 1, 2023, and August 31, 2024.

It calls customers and the public to refuse to engage in corrupt practices and to report any malpractice through its confidential whistleblowing channel.
