The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations in Moyale Town, Marsabit County, were briefly disrupted after stray bullets hit schools, forcing students to flee for safety.
Students at Sessi Mixed Secondary School and St Mary's Mixed Secondary School were on Monday, November 2, forced to flee after bullets from an ongoing conflict in neighbouring Ethiopia struck the schools.
The incident disrupted the distribution of KCSE examination papers, which began on Monday.
The affected students were later relocated to safer areas, with examinations expected to proceed as scheduled.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of teachers, students, and other officers overseeing the ongoing exams, which are expected to conclude by November 20.
The Ministry of Education, however, had not issued any clarification on the matter by the time of publication.
The war in Ethiopia is reportedly between two communities who live near the border of Kenya, with the conflict leading to loss of life and destruction of property.
So far, over 40,000 Ethiopians have already crossed the border to Kenya seeking safety away from the ongoing war.
The Kenya National Commission of Human Rights (KNCHR) has since called for an urgent humanitarian response to protect those displaced and ease pressure on host communities.
According to the commission, the surge in arrivals has increased demand for essential supplies and services , including food, clean water, shelter, sanitation and medical care.
"The influx is placing significant pressure on host communities and available resources, particularly food, clean water, shelter, sanitation and healthcare," KNCHR said in a statement on October 27.
The latest disruption to national examinations raises fresh concerns about safety in the area, with locals calling on the government to intervene and ensure their safety.
