Jemutai Comedian, whose real name is Stella Bunei Koitie, is a Kenyan star who gained prominence through the popular Churchill Show.
Jemutai has since deactivated her social media accounts following her 11th anniversary celebration held in Eldoret on August 16.
The comedian sought support after the event, which was organized to celebrate her 11 years in comedy, during which she has entertained audiences, represented her community, and built a career in Kenya’s entertainment industry.
Jemutai said she had expected support from some leaders who had previously indicated that they would attend or contribute to the celebration. However, she said the anticipated support did not materialize.
She expressed disappointment over the situation, particularly after observing leaders support other artists and entertainers.
According to Jemutai, the lack of support was difficult because she had planned and incurred expenses in preparation for the celebration.
She appealed to Kenyans who have followed her career and supported her comedy over the past 11 years to stand with her during the difficult period.
Jemutai Comedian also said the event left her with financial obligations to service providers and creatives who were involved in making the anniversary celebration possible.
Early Life, Education and Career
Jemutai Comedian has spoken about growing up under the care of a single mother.
In an interview, she said her mother worked at Kenyatta Market plaiting hair and that she spent part of her childhood in Nairobi and part in the countryside.
“I was raised by a single mother. My mom used to work at Kenyatta Market plaiting hair. I grew up in Nairobi and upcountry, so I am familiar with disco matangas and feeding cattle,” stated Jemutai, the comedian.
According to Jemutai, the experience gave her familiarity with both city life and rural activities.
Jemutai studied Information Technology and later secured an internship at KenGen’s Olkaria geothermal facility but eventually decided to pursue comedy instead of continuing along the IT career path.
In the same interview, Jemutai said she auditioned for Churchill Show for about 10 months without securing a role. She said she would travel from Embakasi to the auditions with fare provided by her mother.
Jemutai Comedian eventually attended what she considered her final audition on October 20, 2015. She was selected and made her first appearance on the show two days later, on October 22, 2015.
Jemutai Comedian Rises Through Churchill Show
Jemutai became known for a comic character that drew from rural Kalenjin identity and her observations of everyday Kenyan life.
Her stage presentation often included a headscarf, jacket, long skirt, and other elements associated with her character. She also became associated with mursik, the traditional fermented milk popular among Kalenjin communities.
In an interview with Radio Jambo, Jemutai said she was inspired to pursue comedy after watching performers including Teacher Wanjiku and David the Student on Churchill Live.
Jemutai has also built a presence outside television through social media and live entertainment.
Her comedy has included observations about relationships, family life, culture, and the experiences of ordinary Kenyans. She has also worked as an emcee and participated in commercial brand engagements.
Jemutai has publicly spoken about her relationship with fellow comedian Herman Kago, popularly known as Professor Hamo.
They met in 2015 while both were involved with the Churchill Show, began a relationship, and share two children.
