Professor Luis Franceschi has been appointed Kenya’s first Envoy on Mediation, taking up a new diplomatic role focused on the country’s mediation and peace efforts.
In a statement on August 18, Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei disclosed the appointment after meeting with the Professor and congratulated him on his new role.
“Pleased to meet Prof Luis G. Franceschi, founding Dean of Strathmore University Law School and former Deputy Secretary General of the Commonwealth. Congratulated Prof Franceschi on his appointment by the President of the Republic as Kenya’s first Envoy on Mediation.
This appointment is a shot in the arm to Kenya’s peace diplomacy in the region. I conveyed to Prof. Franceschi my readiness to support his new office,” read part of the statement.
Who is Professor Luis Franceschi?
Luis Franceschi is a Kenyan advocate who was the founding Dean of Strathmore University Law School in Nairobi.
Franceschi served as Dean from January 2012 to January 2020.
He is a legal scholar, educator and writer whose areas of expertise include innovation in legal education, judicial transformation, peace negotiations and comparative constitutional law.
Franceschi has served as Assistant Secretary General at the Commonwealth Secretariat. He previously served as Senior Director for Governance and Peace from January 2020.
His career has included work as a legal adviser to national and international government agencies, commissions and programmes, international and regional courts, the United Nations and the World Bank.
He also served as a Governing Council Delegate and Legal Adviser to the President of the Governing Council of the United Nations Environment Programme, where he co-drafted the UN Nairobi Declaration.
Franceschi has published widely on constitutional law, political affairs and international issues. He was a weekly columnist for the Daily Nation newspaper for almost 10 years.
In 2019, Franceschi was a visiting scholar at the University of Oxford and the University of California, Berkeley Law School.
He has also conducted executive leadership courses for CEOs in several countries and sits on several boards.
Awards and Hobbies
His awards include the 2019 CB Madan Award for legal excellence and the 2018 Utumishi Bora National Award.
The President of Gabon also made him a Chevalier and awarded him the Ordre National du Mérite.
Outside his professional work, Franceschi enjoys cycling, running and mountain climbing.
He has climbed Point Lenana on Mount Kenya five times, reached Uhuru Peak on Mount Kilimanjaro, and completed the Rwenzori Mountains circuit in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
