Malala defends his position in DCP as he reaffirms support for Sifuna’s 2027 presidential bid
The DCP deputy leader insists he remains a founding member of the party while backing the Nairobi senator as the best candidate to lead Kenya.
Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Leader Cleophas Malala has dismissed claims that he has been sidelined in the party, insisting he remains a founding member while reaffirming his support for Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s presidential bid despite party leader Rigathi Gachagua’s own ambitions for the top seat.
Speaking on Citizen TV’s Citizen Sunday Live, Malala said DCP was the first political party he had helped establish, distinguishing his role from his previous involvement in other political outfits, where he had joined as an ordinary member.
“I am among the founder members of DCP. This is the first party I founded. All these other parties I have been joining as an ordinary member, but for this DCP, I am a founder member,” he said.
He also dismissed comparisons between his influence in DCP and that of Secretary-General John Methu, who has been coordinating the party’s activities in the Mount Kenya region.
Malala explained that Methu was assigned the responsibility after Gachagua travelled to the United States to maintain the party’s presence in what he described as its political stronghold.
“When the party leader left, we had to assign Methu that position to keep the mountain warm, and he did a very good job,” he said.

On Sifuna’s presidential bid, Malala reiterated his unwavering support for the Nairobi senator, describing him as a young and visionary leader capable of ushering in a generational transition in the country’s leadership.
“That is in my bone marrow. It’s time for fresh and young leadership. I think Sifuna is best in that role,” he said.
Malala also expressed openness to working with the Linda Mwananchi faction, describing its members as political partners and saying he would welcome cooperation with them while seeking to strengthen DCP.
“Linda Mwananchi is coming up well; those are my partners, and I would be looking forward to working with them. We need to make it strong as DCP,” he said.
His endorsement of Sifuna comes after Gachagua clarified that Malala was not DCP’s spokesperson and that his support for the Nairobi senator did not reflect the party’s official position. Gachagua identified Methu as the party’s spokesperson.
“First and foremost, the deputy party leader is not the spokesman of DCP. The spokesman of DCP is the secretary-general or the party leader,” Gachagua said.
