At the centre of the debate is Clause 22, which proposes changes to Section 39 of the Act, governing the determination, transmission and declaration of election results.
The National Assembly has passed the Elections (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill, 2024, paving the way for proposed changes to Kenya’s electoral framework, including the removal of the legal requirement for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to livestream election results as they are announced at polling stations.
The Bill, Senate Bill No. 29 of 2024, was sponsored by Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah and Minority Leader Junet Mohamed. It seeks to implement recommendations arising from the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) and amend several provisions of the Elections Act, 2011.
