Women leaders from Nyeri County have expressed support for Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru's potential bid for the Deputy President's position in the 2027 General Election, calling on her to consider joining the race.
The women, led by grassroots leader Nasi Dogo, say Waiguru's experience in public service and her tenure as a county governor make her a figure they would like to see take up a bigger leadership role at the national level.
Speaking during a gathering, Dogo said the group had come together to declare its support for Waiguru, promising to mobilise women at the grassroots in preparation for the 2027 elections.
Dogo said the women were ready to leave their homes and engage communities in a campaign to rally support for the Kirinyaga Governor, urging her to provide leadership and formally embrace the proposed political journey.
She also challenged the country's political leadership to give women greater opportunities in senior government positions, arguing that female leaders should have an equal chance to serve at the highest levels of national leadership.
According to Dogo, Waiguru's current position as governor, where she serves alongside a male deputy, demonstrates the importance of gender inclusion in leadership. She questioned why women should not also have an opportunity to serve alongside a male president at the national level.
The grassroots leader maintained that the group was prepared to mobilise its networks and take the campaign to communities, saying its members were ready to support Waiguru's potential quest for the Deputy President's office.
The declaration adds to the emerging political conversations surrounding possible leadership alliances and succession plans ahead of the 2027 General Election, as various leaders and interest groups begin expressing their preferences for the country's next political leadership.
