Former West Pokot Senator Samuel Poghisio has become the latest politician to join the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party as he positions himself to contest the county's gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election.
Poghisio was received at Chungwa House, ODM's headquarters in Nairobi, Tuesday, accompanied by a delegation of leaders from West Pokot County.
His entry into the party comes a day after Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja formally joined ODM, signalling a fresh wave of political realignments as leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
Poghisio was initially a member of ODM and URP before decamping to Kanu.
He served at the senator from 2017-22.
His decision to rejoin ODM provides a new political platform as he seeks to succeed Governor Simon Kachapin, whose administration will be a key factor in the contest for the county's top seat.
The former senator will have to navigate the emerging political competition in West Pokot, where local alliances, party nominations and development concerns are expected to shape the race.
Former governor John Lonyangapuo is among those who have already declared interest in the seat.
On Monday, Sakaja officially joined the party after leaving the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), declaring his intention to seek a second term as Nairobi governor on an ODM ticket.
Explaining his decision, Sakaja linked his political journey to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, ODM's founding leader.
“Baba, Raila Odinga is the one who told me to join ODM,” Sakaja said during his reception at Chungwa House.
The governor also declared his commitment to the party, saying: “I bring energy and conviction, and I am ready to support the party as required and demonstrate the loyalty expected of every member.”
Sakaja's entry has introduced fresh competition for the ODM ticket in Nairobi, with Makadara MP George Aladwa declaring his interest as well.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri are among candidates eyeing the seat.
The party's leadership has pledged to conduct free and fair nominations, amid questions about how it will accommodate new entrants and long-serving members seeking the same positions.
Poghisio's arrival similarly sets the stage for negotiations and competition within ODM as the party seeks to strengthen its presence across the country.
Poghisio brings decades of experience in public service, having served in different capacities under successive administrations, including as an assistant minister during the presidency of Daniel Moi, a Cabinet minister under Mwai Kibaki and a senator representing West Pokot county.
With the 2027 elections approaching, the entry of established political figures such as Poghisio and Sakaja underscores the growing importance of party affiliation in the battle for gubernatorial seats.
