Westlands Member of Parliament (MP) Tim Wanyonyi, who is a powerful politician in the William Ruto government, has issued scholarship cheques to 42 bright and needy students.
What began as a minor support through the Westlands NG-CDF Scholarship Programme has seen students from diverse backgrounds attend secondary schools, colleges and universities in what many beneficiaries and parents say is a show of strategic and sustainable economic tool.
The political titan also encouraged the beneficiaries not to allow difficult circumstances at home to determine their future.
“Education will propel you to greater heights. If you succeed, you inspire your siblings to be like you,” Wanyonyi said, urging beneficiaries to focus on studies while setting ambitious goals.
He also encouraged them to set big goals and remain focused on their ambitions.
Wanyonyi challenged parents to remain actively involved in their children’s lives, noting that young people need parental guidance as they progress through school and choose careers.
“Do not distance yourself from your children. They need guidance,” he said. “Even when choosing careers, do not force them. Let them pursue their passion.”
According to Westlands NG-CDF Chairlady Frida Lenayasa, for the most part, such scholarships ensure bright and needy students continue with their education.
“We have many of them in Westlands whose parents do not have the means,” says Lenayasa.
She added that Westlands NG-CDF allocates 40 percent of its resources to education programmes, mainly covering bursaries and scholarships.
“To the students, retain your top grades. You can only improve on them,” she said, encouraging learners to work towards successful careers after completing their education.
Other students shared their education journeys and explained how the scholarship programme had supported them.
Academic visit
In the meantime, MP Wanyonyi has supported Harriet Blessing Onyango, a Grade 10 student at Loresho Senior School, with visa application facilitation to the United States for an academic visit.
Ms. Onyango, who earned her place through the strength of her research on food security. is one of two delegates selected from the 2026 Kenya Youth Institute to attend the Global Youth Institute. She will also participate in the Norman E. Borlaug International Dialogue.
The World Food Prize Foundation will host the event in Des Moines, Iowa, from October 20–22, 2026.
