Fred Ambani is a former Harambee Stars striker who has successfully transitioned into coaching, earning recognition as one of Kenya’s emerging football tacticians after spells with AFC Leopards and other local clubs.
Early Life and Education
Fred Ambani was born in 1977 at Kahawa Barracks, Kenya.
He attended Kahawa Garrison Primary School, then Nanyuki High School, and later Kakamega High School.
His football talent developed during his school years.
While still in school, Ambani began playing for Rivatex FC, an Eldoret-based club, where he spent a year and emerged as the league’s second-highest scorer.
His performances attracted interest from established clubs, leading to his move to AFC Leopards in 1997.
Professional Football Career
Fred Ambani began his professional football career at Rivatex FC in Eldoret, where he emerged as the league’s second-highest scorer before joining AFC Leopards in 1997.
At Ingwe, he played alongside established footballers, including Simeon Mulama and Austin Makacha, and scored his maiden goal for the club against Nzoia Sugar FC.
Ambani reached the peak of his playing career in 1998 when AFC Leopards won the Kenyan Premier League title.
He finished the season as the club’s top scorer, one goal ahead of his younger brother, Boniface Ambani.
The championship remains significant in the club’s history, as it was the last time Ingwe won the league title.
After leaving AFC Leopards, Fred joined Oserian FC, where he partnered with Boniface as the club won consecutive league titles in 2001 and 2002.
He later played for Nakuru FC, Kenya Pipeline FC and Chemelil Sugar FC before moving to Oman, where he featured for Nizwa FC and Salalah FC.
A hand injury sustained during pre-season with Chemelil disrupted his plans to continue playing abroad, prompting his return to Kenya.
Upon his return, Ambani joined Brook Bond FC, where he combined playing duties with coaching responsibilities.
The role marked the beginning of his transition from professional footballer to coach.
Harambee Stars Career
Fred Ambani earned his first Harambee Stars call-up in 1997, shortly after joining AFC Leopards.
Coach Christian Chukwu selected him after he made just three appearances for Ingwe.
Ambani made his international debut during the Four Nations Cup in South Africa, where he featured against Namibia and scored his first goal for Kenya.
He later represented Kenya as a forward.
Coaching Career
Fred Ambani transitioned to coaching after his playing career, initially combining playing and coaching duties at Brook Bond FC before moving into full-time coaching at Zoo FC.
In the 2019/2020 season, Ambani coached Wazito FC during its campaign in the National Super League.
The club appointed him head coach again in August 2020, replacing Stewart Hall, with former Western Stima coach Salim Babu named his assistant.
Ambani returned to AFC Leopards in November 2024 as interim head coach following the departure of Tomas Trucha.
He guided the team through five matches, recording three wins and two draws in his initial run.
Drawing on his experience as a member of the club’s 1998 title-winning squad, he made winning the league a central objective of his tenure.
In January 2026, Ambani won the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK)/Betika Coach of the Month award for December 2025 after guiding AFC Leopards to three wins and a draw, including a 1–0 Mashemeji Derby victory over Gor Mahia.
He won the monthly award again in April 2026 for his team’s March performances, when Leopards recorded four wins in five matches.
On August 25, 2026, AFC Leopards confirmed that Ambani would continue as head coach for the 2026/2027 season.
The club appointed Bernard Mwalala as first assistant coach and Kenneth Wendo as second assistant.
