James Douglas Sheahan Neesham, widely known as Jimmy Neesham, is a New Zealand international cricketer born on 17 September 1990 in Auckland.

He is a left-handed batting all-rounder who bowls right-arm medium-fast and has represented New Zealand across Test, One Day International, and Twenty20 International formats since his debut in late 2012.

Neesham is recognized for his powerful middle-order batting, useful medium-pace bowling, and athletic fielding.

He attended Auckland Grammar School, where he developed his skills under coaches including David Gordon, and comes from a family with a strong sporting background spanning rugby, netball, rowing, and athletics.

Beyond the national team, he has featured extensively in domestic cricket for sides such as Auckland, Otago, and Wellington, as well as numerous T20 franchise leagues around the world.

    James has two older siblings. His elder brother is Michael Neesham, and his elder sister is Sarah Neesham, making James the youngest of the three children.

    Their parents, Mark and Debbie Neesham, both competed at senior levels in rugby and netball, while grandparents represented New Zealand in rowing and athletics.

    Career

    Neesham began his first-class career with Auckland before transferring to Otago ahead of the 2011–12 season, where strong contributions in the 50-over format, including scores over 40 at a high strike rate and bowling figures such as 5 for 44, earned him national recognition.

    He made his T20I debut against South Africa on 21 December 2012. He followed this with his ODI debut against the same opponent on 19 January 2013.

    His Test debut came against India on 14 February 2014.

    On Test debut he scored an unbeaten 137, the highest score by a number-eight batsman on debut. He has played 12 Tests, scoring 709 runs at an average of about 33.76 with two centuries.

    He has also played 76 ODIs with 1,495 runs and around 70 wickets.

    In T20Is, he has made more than 100 appearances, scoring over 1,100 runs and taking 60-plus wickets.

    Domestically he has also represented Wellington and returned to Auckland at times.

    In franchise cricket he has appeared in the Indian Premier League for Delhi Daredevils (later Capitals), Kolkata Knight Riders, Kings XI Punjab (Punjab Kings), Mumbai Indians, and Rajasthan Royals.

    He has also represented teams in the Caribbean Premier League, English T20 competitions, and other global leagues.

    He was part of New Zealand’s squads that reached the final of the 2019 Cricket World Cup and the 2021 T20 World Cup.

    He contributed with both bat and ball in key matches, including notable performances in the 2019 final.

    Accolades

    Neesham was a member of the New Zealand team that finished as runners-up at the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in England and Wales and at the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup.

    He scored a century on Test debut with 137 not out against India in 2014, a record for the highest score by a debutant batting at number eight.

    In limited-overs cricket he has recorded best bowling figures of 5 for 27 in ODIs and 5 for 22 in T20Is. He was named New Zealand’s ODI Player of the Year in 2019 and T20I Player of the Year around 2020.

    Earlier recognition came as Cricinfo Find of the Tournament during the Champions League Twenty20.

    Domestically he has contributed to title-winning campaigns with Wellington, including the Ford Trophy and Super Smash competitions.
