NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 5 – MyCredit Limited has committed Sh500 million to help 150 schools across Kenya switch from firewood to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cooking systems under a new clean energy partnership with Volcanova Africa Limited.
The digital credit provider said the initiative will finance the modernisation of school kitchens and support the transition to cleaner cooking methods, targeting schools that rely on wood fuel.
The partnership was launched at Fadhili Junior School in Nairobi, where the two companies renovated the school’s kitchen and installed institutional LPG cookers.
MyCredit Managing Director Wangaruro Mbira said the partnership seeks to combine school financing with efforts to improve public health and environmental sustainability.
“We are proud to partner with Volcanova Africa to bring clean cooking infrastructure directly to the heart of the education system. We want to ensure that our strategic school financing goes hand in hand with achieving public health and environmental mandates. We are not just upgrading stoves; we are protecting our children’s future and our forests,” Mbira said.
The companies said switching schools from firewood to LPG is expected to reduce exposure to indoor air pollution among kitchen staff and students, lower cooking costs and reduce institutional demand for firewood.
Volcanova Africa Chief Executive Officer Yusuf Ssemakula said the company will focus on installing the LPG infrastructure required to modernise institutional kitchens.
“We focus entirely on the hands-on work of equipping institutional kitchens with LPG. By prioritising the physical setup and infrastructure required to upgrade large-scale kitchens, we turn clean energy ambition into a functional, everyday reality,” Ssemakula said.
The initiative will be implemented through MyCredit’s Kuza Elimu financing product, which provides schools with funding for working capital, infrastructure development and asset financing.
MyCredit is a licensed Digital Credit Provider with 805 employees and has provided financing to 33,815 businesses and individuals, with its loan portfolio exceeding USD45 million.
The company said Kuza Elimu also supports investments in sustainable solutions, including clean cooking and other green finance initiatives.
