Starlets head into the encounter under pressure after opening their campaign with a 3-0 defeat to China, leaving them needing a response to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.

Kenya’s Junior Starlets face a stern examination at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup tonight when they take on the United States in their second Group E fixture, with kick-off scheduled for 9:00 pm.

Mildred Cheche’s charges head into the encounter under pressure after opening their campaign with a 3-0 defeat to China, leaving them needing a response to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.

The Kenyan side showed flashes of promise against China but struggled to contain their opponents after the break. Xu Yue gave China the lead in the 12th minute before Xiaotang Xu struck twice shortly after half-time to seal the victory.

Despite the defeat, Junior Starlets created opportunities, with Brenda Achieng, Lindey Atieno and Brenda Awuor among those who threatened the Chinese goal. However, their inability to convert those chances proved costly.

Cheche admitted that her team must improve in both boxes if they are to compete against the Americans.

“A lot has to be worked on, especially in the defensive side and on the attacking before the next match. We did well in creating chances, but now we need to rectify and convert our chances. We keep fighting for the country as we go to the next match,” she said after the loss to China.

Those improvements will be crucial against a United States side arriving in formidable scoring form after dismantling Samoa 17-0 in their opening match.

The Americans scored nine goals in the first half before adding eight after the break in a record-setting victory that became the biggest win in an 11-a-side FIFA World Cup match.

Forward Maddie DiMaria was the standout performer, scoring six goals to set a new record for the most goals by an individual player in a Women's World Cup match at any level. 10 American players found the net as they overwhelmed their opponents with relentless attacking pressure.

The result underlined the scale of the challenge facing Kenya, whose defence will need to remain organised and disciplined to prevent the Americans from finding the same spaces they exploited against Samoa.

However, the Junior Starlets cannot afford to focus solely on defending. Their opening match showed they can create chances, and converting those opportunities will be equally important if they are to trouble the American defence.

Kenya will also need to manage the tempo of the game and avoid conceding early, which could allow the United States to settle into their attacking rhythm. Maintaining concentration throughout both halves will be vital against a side capable of scoring in quick succession.

The Junior Starlets will be hoping to draw inspiration from their maiden appearance at the 2024 tournament in the Dominican Republic. Although they exited at the group stage, their historic 2-1 victory over Mexico in their final match demonstrated their ability to compete against established opponents on the world stage.

The United States, meanwhile, are seeking their first U17 Women's World Cup title. Despite their emphatic start, the Americans have not won the competition, having reached the final in the inaugural edition in 2008 and the semi-finals in 2024.

For Kenya, tonight's fixture presents an opportunity to respond to their opening defeat and demonstrate the progress made since their first appearance at the tournament.

With two group matches remaining after the opening round of fixtures, the Junior Starlets know that a positive result against the United States would significantly boost their hopes of progressing to the round of 16. To achieve that, they must combine defensive resilience with greater precision in front of goal.
