NAIROBI, Kenya, October 31, 2026 – Kabras Sugar head coach Carlos Katywa is set to take over as national men’s 15s team boss following the departure of his fellow countryman Jerome Paarwater.
In an interview on Capital FM Saturday and Music Sports Show, Kenya Rugby Union (KRU)’s director of leagues and competitions Leslie Mwangale confirmed that the South African is set to head the national 15s set up, citing his vast knowledge of the Kenyan rugby terrain as reason for the appointment.
“He is the new head coach for the 15s programme. He understands our players. He understands the physique. He understands what our players can do, how to use them so, I think it’s a good fit. He’s someone who is always around and he’ll able to go around, identify talent,” Mwangale said.
The Umtata-born tactician has established the sugar millers as the kings of 15s in Kenya, winning the Kenya Cup four consecutive times since he took the reins in 2022.
He has also led the Kakamega-based giants to four consecutive Enterprise Cup crowns, developing a burgeoning reputation as a trophy magnet coach.
Until his elevation, Katywa was one of two assistants to Paarwater who was in his second stint as Simbas head coach after his return in March 2023.
The former flyhalf was most recently part of the technical bench for the national under 20 side, Chipu, who thrashed Namibia 33-14 in the finals of the Barthes Cup in Uganda in August this year.
