Kenya’s 2026/27 season has an odd shape. The domestic league only started on 9 October, held up by a court dispute over the last promotion place, while the national team is already two matchdays into a qualifying campaign it cannot be knocked out of.
One calendar is the only way to see how that fits together, and a round-up such as Shujaa Sport saves cross-checking CAF, Athletics Kenya and World Rugby in a week when all three have something on. Most of the decisive dates are published already.
Kenyan sporting events on the 2026/27 calendar
The Kenyan sporting events that matter cluster in two places: the November window and the spring.
| Event | Window | What is at stake |
| AFCON 2027 qualifiers, matchdays 3–4 | 9–17 November 2026 | Which rival joins the qualified hosts |
| FKF Premier League | 9 October 2026 onwards | Gor Mahia defending a record 22nd title |
| HSBC SVNS second division | November 2026 to May 2027 | Shujaa’s route back to the top tier |
| Kip Keino Classic, Nairobi | 30 April 2027 | Test event for the 2029 Nairobi worlds |
| AFCON 2027 finals | 19 June – 17 July 2027 | Kenya’s first home AFCON |
The athletics meetings and the AFCON finals share stadiums, so construction work in Nairobi pushes on both.
Sports in Kenya: Harambee Stars in AFCON 2027 Group D
Football pulls the largest audiences of all the sports in Kenya, and this cycle carries a guarantee: as co-hosts with Tanzania and Uganda, Kenya are in the finals regardless of results.
The group still matters, because only the highest-placed team other than Kenya advances from Group D, a rule CAF applies to all three host groups.
Kenya drew 1-1 with Eritrea at Nyayo National Stadium on 26 September, Ogam equalising in the 87th minute, then lost 1-0 in Conakry on 1 October to a Guirassy goal. One point from two games leaves them third, behind South Africa on six and Guinea on three. Four fixtures remain:
- South Africa v Kenya, 11 November 2026
- Kenya v South Africa, 15 November 2026
- Eritrea v Kenya, 24 March 2027
- Kenya v Guinea, 28 March 2027
The back-to-back South Africa games are the squad’s only test against a side of that level before June.
Venues before a home tournament
The 60,000-seat Talanta Stadium in Nairobi and the 48,000-seat Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani are Kenya’s designated AFCON venues, with Nyayo National Stadium and an upgraded Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret as alternatives. A CAF delegation finished an eight-day inspection across the three host countries on 4 September 2026.
Kenya sports news from the FKF Premier League
Through September the Kenya sports news was administrative rather than sporting: the start slipped while courts heard a dispute over the eighteenth place, settled by a two-legged playoff between Kariobangi Sharks and Mombasa United. Nyayo was unavailable, so the champions’ first fixture was published without a venue.
Gor Mahia took the 2025/26 title with 69 points from 34 matches and a 50-22 goal difference, ahead of AFC Leopards on 64 and Kenya Police FC on 55. The continental picture differed: they went out of the CAF Champions League preliminary round to Pyramids, 7-1 on aggregate. That is the distance between a domestic title and the group stage in Africa.
Latest sports news Kenya has had from rugby sevens
The latest sports news Kenya received from sevens came down to a single point. Shujaa, the men’s national side, reached the 2026 SVNS Championship as second-tier runners-up on 50 points and finished ninth there.
At the Bordeaux finale they beat Uruguay 26-7 in the eleventh-place playoff, but the United States’ 17-14 win over Fiji lifted the Americans past them by one point.
That keeps Shujaa in the second division for 2026/27 and out of the Dubai opener in November. Their Olympic route now runs through the African qualifier in late 2027, with the June 2028 repechage as the fallback.
Kenyan sports updates from the track
The best Kenyan sports updates of the past year came out of Tokyo, where the team finished second in the World Athletics medal table with seven golds, two silvers and two bronzes. Six of those golds were won by women: Beatrice Chebet took the 10,000m and 5000m double, Faith Kipyegon a fourth world 1500m title, Peres Jepchirchir the marathon, Faith Cherotich the steeplechase and Lilian Odira the 800m. Emmanuel Wanyonyi’s 1:41.86 was the only men’s gold and a championship record.
Beijing hosts the next world championships on 10–19 September 2027, and Nairobi stages the 2029 edition, the first on African soil.
What to watch first
The two South Africa fixtures in November set the tone for a season Kenya spends preparing rather than qualifying, and the league then holds the calendar until the track takes over in spring.
