Government repairs a section of Migori footbridge

Migori County Commissioner Kisilu Mutua has confirmed that all necessary actions have been taken to ensure that a section of the footbridge connecting Migori town and its environs is repaired.

A section of the footbridge was cut off on Monday and left dangerously hanging due to the raging floodwaters of the Migori River that washed away the gabions protecting it at the upstream.

There has been an increase in water levels in the Migori River due to ongoing rainfall in the region.

Already, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) had issued an official statement on the closure of the footbridge.

Mutua also said that the main bridge connecting Migori town to Isebania was in good condition and continuous assessments will be done to ascertain its structural integrity.

He also disclosed that vehicles weighing more than 20 tonnes will be allowed to pass one at a time to ensure maximum safety of the occupants as well as their vehicles.

The official, however, cautioned the Migori residents residing along the river Migori to take care and be vigilant to protect their lives and their property.

A statement issued by the Migori County has also urged motorists and pedestrians to exercise heightened vigilance and strictly observe safety guidance that may be issued on the site.

River Migori has also broken its banks, washing away makeshift structures as well as affecting various businesses along its tiers.

According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, Migori County is expected to receive moderate to high rainfall in the next five days.
