Yemen has declared firm political support for Iran and issued a stern warning to US President Donald Trump, blaming the United States (U.S) and Israel for escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and disrupting global maritime security.
In a statement issued in Sanaa on April 28, Yemen’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said the crisis in the strategic waterway was the direct result of continued American and Israeli actions against Iran.
The ministry said the situation was discussed a day earlier during an open debate at the United Nations Security Council on maritime security.
“The solution to the situation in the Strait of Hormuz lies in ending the American‑Israeli aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the ministry said in the statement.
Yemen accused the United States of carrying out what it described as piracy in the Gulf of Oman and condemned attacks on Iranian commercial vessels.
It also criticized the detention of Iranian ship crews, describing such actions as a violation of international law and freedom of navigation.
According to the statement, these actions have disrupted international shipping routes and global supply chains, increased transportation costs, and driven up energy and food prices.
The Foreign Ministry said the world was already paying a heavy economic price for instability in key maritime corridors.
It warned that further escalation would place additional pressure on the global economy, which is already struggling with inflation, trade disruptions, and rising commodity prices.
Yemen’s Support for Iran’s Actions
Sanaa openly defended Iran’s recent actions in the Strait of Hormuz, describing them as legitimate and lawful.
Yemen said Iran has the right to defend itself and to take necessary measures within its territorial waters to counter security threats.
The Foreign Ministry stressed that international law allows states to protect their sovereignty and security, including the right to regulate or restrict navigation in territorial waters in response to danger.
It said Iran’s actions should be assessed within this legal framework.
Yemen rejected claims that Iran was responsible for rising instability in the Strait, arguing that Tehran’s measures were a reaction to sustained pressure, sanctions, and military threats.
The ministry said focusing blame on Iran while ignoring the root causes of the crisis would only deepen tensions and increase the risk of wider conflict.
The statement warned that military solutions or increased pressure on Iran would not restore stability.
Instead, it said such approaches would increase the likelihood of confrontation and threaten the steady flow of oil and gas through the Strait of Hormuz.
The ministry reiterated that a significant share of global energy exports passes through the Strait each day, and any disruption there would have immediate and far‑reaching consequences for global markets and national economies.
Stern Warning to Trump
Yemen warned President Trump and other powers outside the region against actions that could further escalate the situation.
The Foreign Ministry accused Trump of pursuing aggressive policies that have contributed to regional instability and global economic harm.
It cautioned that new military moves or intensified pressure would worsen supply chain disruptions, increase energy prices, and create further uncertainty for the world economy.
The ministry said that only by dealing with these underlying issues could security and stability return to the Strait of Hormuz.
The statement also welcomed mediation efforts by Pakistan aimed at easing tensions and ending US‑Israeli actions against Iran.
Yemen said dialogue and political solutions offered the only realistic path away from confrontation.
Most significantly, the Foreign Ministry said Yemen does not consider itself neutral in the current regional conflicts.
It said Yemen’s position on what it described as ongoing attacks against Iran, Lebanon, and Palestine was “clear, declared and explicit”.
