Drama in Ruai as police attempt to evict widow from disputed land

There was drama in Ruai this morning after police officers, accompanied by tractors, arrived at the homestead of Alice Wanjiru in an attempted demolition and eviction. Alice, a widow, says she has called the property home for more than 34 years, living there with her husband until his death last year. The family says they were caught off guard when a private developer arrived with court orders authorising their eviction. The developer, identified as Boniface Njeru, claims he legally purchased the land from Alice’s late husband in 2011. Alice disputes the sale, saying she was never involved in any court proceedings over the property and only learnt of the case when the demolition attempt began. The standoff quickly turned chaotic after area residents rallied in her defence, prompting police to fire teargas to disperse the crowd.
