Norman’s mother was working in her office. Her husband was at work elsewhere. It was almost lunchtime, and the office wasn’t too busy. She got a call from Norman’s school. The school needed his parents.

Norman was in his last year of high school. They were glad that it was finally coming to an end. Norman’s journey through school had been hectic for them. They had lost count of how many schools he’d been to since kindergarten. He was finally in the last stretch, and they’d hoped he would complete it without any drama.

“Can you go alone? I have to meet some important clients,” Norman’s father told his wife.

“Let me see if I can get some time off,” she said.

She was able to make it to the school that afternoon since it was urgent. She found a small crowd outside the office. The students were in class. She had an eerie feeling.

“Mama Norman, this way,” the secretary told her.

From the look on the teachers’ faces, this was serious. She’d become accustomed to Norman’s sins, but this one was different.

She tried calling her husband, but he was still in the meeting, so she texted him. The next step was to look for a lawyer. She couldn’t make that decision without Norman’s father’s input, but she started looking for one through her contacts and some research. After what felt like an eternity, Norman’s father called back.

“I need you to be alone when I tell you this,” she started.

Norman’s father went to his car.

“They are saying a child died after being bullied by Norman,” she cried.

“What? He killed a child?” Norman’s father flipped.

“That’s what they are saying,” she replied.

“How? Did he beat him? How?”

“They say they were fighting and the boy died later. We need a lawyer,” she told him.

Norman’s father went through his wife’s list of suggested lawyers, and he also made some calls. They got one. Norman’s admission to that school had come with a massive bribe. The principal had tried keeping things under wraps, but the victim’s family had caused a scene. They were threatening to call the media if they couldn’t find the truth.

When they spoke to the lawyer, there was another problem. Norman had turned 18 that month, so he would likely be tried as an adult. This was different from every other incident.

Norman’s mischief had started when he was young. They ran through countless nannies because they couldn’t put up with him. Norman’s parents had given them strict instructions not to discipline him. “Kababa, did auntie beat or shout at you?” Norman’s mother would monitor. When their friends or family made comments on Norman’s behaviour, they defended him. “He’s just a kid,” they’d say.

Over the years, the excuse had turned to, “He’s just a boy being a boy.” Then, when they asked him why he bullied kids, he claimed that it was because he didn’t like the schools, and other times he lied about fighting back after being attacked.

Norman was gifted academically, and he was also charming when he wanted to, and he used that to create cliques and have other people do the dirty work for him, but eventually he would still get into trouble directly.

“I don’t think we can solve this one,” Norman’s father told the mother.

“He will be locked up for life if we can’t,” Norman’s mother said.

Norman was taken into custody for questioning. The victim’s family brought out the issue to social media, making it even more difficult for Norman to evade justice. When questioned by his parents and his lawyer about what happened, he claimed that he did fight with the boy, but the boy was fine when he left him. Later they learned that the boy’s head hit a stone wall and developed a bleed.

Norman’s parents didn’t like the options the lawyer gave them as possible outcomes. Once more, they did what they did best and used their money and contacts to get Norman out of the jam. It took a while, and it almost looked like they couldn’t do it, but between falsified reports, bribed cops, and several other people in between, Norman’s case was dropped. He was immediately sent to a different country.

Norman’s parents convinced themselves that the victim had bad luck and fights between boys were never done with intent to kill. For the first time, Norman looked remorseful for what had happened, but only time would tell whether he’d learned his lesson. The victim’s family hoped a higher power would avenge them because the justice system had failed them.
