Safaricom’s Ziidi MMF was supposed to make saving painless. The premise of the Auto-Invest feature is brilliant: every time you spend or transfer money via M-PESA, a small fraction, either a fixed amount like Ksh. 50 or a set percentage, is automatically swept into your money market fund. Micro-investing on autopilot.
Except for one massive, maddening design flaw: the relentless notification loop.
Imagine running errands on a busy Saturday. You pay for coffee at Java via Till, send bus fare to a sibling, buy groceries at the supermarket, pay your Kenya Power bill, and tip the car wash guy. That’s 10 quick M-PESA transactions.
Under normal circumstances, you expect 10 M-PESA confirmation messages. But with Ziidi Auto-Invest enabled, every single primary transaction triggers a secondary auto-deduction. And for every single deduction, Ziidi feels compelled to blow up your phone with an instant SMS alert:
- Transaction 1: M-PESA Payment confirmation.
- Transaction 1 (Ziidi): “You have invested Ksh. 50 in Ziidi…”
- Transaction 2: M-PESA Send Money confirmation.
- Transaction 2 (Ziidi): “You have invested Ksh. 50 in Ziidi…”
By the time you get home, your SMS inbox looks like a crime scene with 20 separate text notifications. Instead of feeling like a savvy investor quietly building wealth in the background, you feel like you’re being harassed by your own financial app. Not to mention the risk of my phone being stolen or being accosted by thugs and they can clearly see I have money on Ziidi.
Automation is supposed to happen in the dark. The entire psychological benefit of auto-investing relies on passive accumulation, setting a rule and forgetting about it until you check your quarterly balance.
When a product forces you to actively process two text messages for every routine transaction, it creates notification fatigue. Instead of rewarding good financial habits, the platform penalizes you with screen noise.
To fix this, the product team at Safaricom doesn’t need to scrap Auto-Invest; they just need to give users granular control over their alerts:
- In-App Silent Mode: Let users toggle off instant SMS alerts for micro-investments below a certain threshold (e.g. Ksh. 100).
- Consolidated Daily Summaries: Replace 10 daily text messages with a single evening SMS: “Today, Ziidi Auto-Invest saved Ksh. 500 across 10 transactions.”
- Push Notifications Only: Route Ziidi alerts exclusively through the M-PESA App push notifications rather than clogging the native SMS inbox.
Until Safaricom adds a simple Mute SMS toggle for micro-deductions, many users will inevitably hit their limit, open the M-PESA app, and switch Auto-Invest completely off, proving that over-communicating can ruin an otherwise great product. I can confirm that I am one of them (Great feature, terrible execution).
