Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have intercepted a vehicle suspected of transporting illicit second-generation alcohol from Uganda.
The operation was conducted by officers from DCI Kiminini and DCI Chwele following intelligence that the alcohol was being transported through the area.
According to the DCI, the officers pursued a Toyota Wish from Kiminini to the Mali Saba (Emuro) area, where the driver and a passenger abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot after realising they were being pursued by police.
The vehicle was left running before it hit a roadside structure and came to a stop.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 24 cartons of Jonney’s alcohol, with each carton containing 24 bottles of 200ml, and 10 cartons of White Gin, also containing 24 bottles of 200ml each.
The vehicle was towed to Kiminini Police Station, where the recovered alcohol was secured as exhibits pending further processing.
Police have launched efforts to trace and arrest the driver and passenger, as well as establish the owner of the vehicle.
“The DCI remains committed to disrupting the trafficking and distribution of illicit alcohol and protecting communities from its harmful effects,” the DCI said.
