The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) Machakos Chapter and the Machakos County Fire and Rescue teams have concluded a two-day joint water rescue training at Athi River Dam in Mavoko Sub-County, as part of heightened preparedness for the anticipated El Niño rains.
The exercise, which brought together first responders from both agencies, focused on strengthening coordination and equipping rescue teams with practical life-saving skills ahead of the heavy rains.
Machakos County Red Cross Coordinator Faith Kavuli, while speaking to KNA in Mavoko, said the training prioritised hands-on skills critical during flood emergencies.
“The joint training was aimed at strengthening coordination and practical skills ahead of the expected rains. Participants focused on boat operations, manoeuvring and basic rescue techniques using ropes and sticks,” said Kavuli.
She noted that the county has already commenced community sensitisation over the past weeks on flood safety, particularly in flood-prone lowlands, as well as clearing of drainages in several towns.
“We have sensitised residents in parts of the county on flood safety, and we are urging those living in low-lying areas to move to higher ground to avert disaster,” she said.
Kavuli cautioned residents against risky behaviour during floods, warning that even shallow moving water can be deadly.
“Never underestimate moving water. Avoid walking through moving water and driving across flooded bridges and roads, and do not allow children to play in floodwater. Use long sticks to test depth and always listen to radio and television for weather alerts,” she cautioned.
The coordinator said the Red Cross and county government have activated a multi-agency response system and urged residents to report emergencies promptly.
“We urge residents to use the multi-agency hotline numbers 0720808900, 0715068863, 08006000016 or KRCS toll-free line 1199 to report any emergency incidents for quick response,” said Kavuli.
The county fire and rescue officers who participated in the drill said the joint exercise had improved their readiness, noting that coordinated boat operations and rope rescue techniques will be crucial in evacuating families marooned by floods along the Athi River and other low-lying areas.
The training comes as the county intensifies El Niño preparedness measures, including clearing of drainages and public awareness campaigns in flood-prone sub-counties.
