More than 400 pupils have been sent home from Reberwet Primary School in Emurua Dikirr Constituency, Narok County, after public health officials ordered the institution closed over sanitation failures affecting both learners and teachers.
The closure, which is in force, followed assessments of toilet facilities at the school. Some units have no doors, and sections of the structures are deteriorating, according to parents who spoke about the state of the compound.
With the school shut, parents have spent days on site digging and constructing a new pit latrine. They are supplying their own materials and labour, and say the work has attracted little or no outside support.
The closure comes amid warnings of heavy rains. One parent said the expected downpours could worsen conditions at the school and argued that the institution needs a permanent toilet rather than a temporary fix.
Parents also questioned why their children are at home while learners in other schools continue sitting examinations.
The parents are now asking elected leaders and government agencies to intervene so that the pupils can return to class.
Kenyan school infrastructure standards require institutions to maintain adequate and safe sanitation, with separate facilities for learners and staff. Ministry of Education guidance requires hygienic toilets and handwashing facilities, while the Basic Education Act places responsibility on education authorities to support the effective delivery of basic education.
Reberwet Primary School has previously featured in Emurua Dikirr National Government Constituencies Development Fund records, including allocations for classrooms and land, according to government records. More recent constituency financial documents also list the school.
Emurua Dikirr is represented by David Kipsang Keter of the United Democratic Alliance, who won the constituency by-election held on May 14, 2026. He succeeded the late MP Johana Ng’eno, who died in a helicopter crash on February 28, 2026, prompting the by-election. Parliament records show Keter delivered his maiden speech as MP in June 2026.
