President William Ruto announced a new homeownership plan targeting teachers under the government’s affordable housing program.
Speaking during the World Teachers’ Day celebrations at Kasarani Stadium on October 5, 2026, Ruto said the government had committed to reserving 20% of affordable housing units for teachers.
He said the Affordable Housing Board signed an agreement with the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and KUPPET in September 2025 to facilitate the allocation.
“We are also opening a new path to home ownership for teachers. We committed to reserving 20% of affordable homes for teachers. In September 2025, the Affordable Housing Board signed an agreement with the Kenya National Union of Teachers and KUPPET,” he said.
According to Ruto, the agreement provides that one in every five homes in affordable housing developments is reserved for teachers.
Teachers Salary Check-Off System For Affordable Housing Allocation
Ruto said the Affordable Housing Board is working with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on a check-off system that will allow teachers to pay for their homes directly from their salaries.
He added that a dedicated team is supporting teachers seeking to acquire the housing units.
The President further said the government is partnering with teachers’ SACCOs to design financing options based on teachers’ incomes.
“The Affordable Housing Board is working with TSC on a check-off system so that you can pay for your home directly from your salary. A dedicated team now supports teachers. We are also partnering with Teachers’ SACCOs to design financing that fits a teacher’s income.”
According to Ruto, teachers seeking to purchase the units can apply for their preferred homes through the Boma Yangu platform.
