Florentius Koech is a Kenyan neurosurgeon and founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Tophill Brain and Spine Hospital in Eldoret.
Under his leadership at the Tophill Hospital, the facility has focused on addressing cases related to spine ailments in Kenya.
Despite the financial challenges during the founding and the continued enhancement of the facility, Tophill Hospital remains among the facilities offering spine and brain treatment.

Florentius Koech Early Life and Education Background
Florentius Kamar Kipchirchir Koech is a Kenyan-born neurosurgeon who picked an interest in the medical field after spending several months in the isolation ward.
At the age of 10, Florentius was admitted to an isolation ward on a suspected tetanus case, and through spending his time in the ward with the neurosurgeon who treated him, he was inspired to venture into neurosurgery.
“The doctor changed my life. I wanted to be like him and to make a difference because from the pain I had, he gave me hope. All through high school, I knew I wanted to be a neurosurgeon,” Koech said during an interview with the Standard.
Koech completed his O Levels at Tenwek High School and, while attending Alliance High School, completed his A Levels.
For his higher education, Koech studied Medicine (MBChB) at the University of Nairobi and, in 2002, earned his master’s degree in general surgery (MMed).
Additionally, the neurosurgeon pursued advanced training in neurosurgery at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, between 2004 and 2007.
For his internship, Koech undertook a clinical exposure program and training linked to the Indiana University in the USA.
Medical Career and Achievements
Upon returning to Kenya after his studies, Florentius Koech joined the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH).
In 2007, he founded the neurosurgery department at MTRH and worked to save the lives of the victims of the 2007 post-election violence.
According to the neurosurgeon, the MTRH lacked basic neurosurgical equipment required to perform neurosurgery services.
Further, Koech added that patients at the MTRH were sharing wards, prompting him to work as a private neurosurgeon and later to establish the Tophill Brain and Spine Hospital, which is currently among the leading private neurosurgical facilities.
Founding the health facility faced financial challenges, leading the neurosurgeon to purchase equipment for as little as KSh 2,000 and as much as KSh 10,000.
Apart from his medical career, Florentius Koech worked as a lecturer at the Moi University School of Medicine.
Koech also has publications in the surgical and neurosurgical fields, including studies on spinal injuries and brain tumors.
Family
Koech has worked in the medical field alongside his wife, the co-founder of Tophill Brain and Spine Hospital.
Koech’s wife is a pediatric cardiologist whose details are not publicly known.
