The Kenya Prisons Service has confirmed the death of Senior Superintendent of Prisons (SSP) Alex Kazungu, Officer in Charge of Mombasa Remand Prison, and his daughter in a fatal road traffic accident at Konza, Machakos County.
In a condolence message on August 25, Commissioner General of Prisons Patrick M. Aranduh expressed condolences to the bereaved family, relatives, colleagues, and the entire Mombasa Remand Prison fraternity following the deaths.
“It is with profound sadness that I announce the tragic passing of SSP Alex Kazungu, Officer in Charge, Mombasa Remand Prison, and his beloved daughter, who both lost their lives in a fatal road traffic accident at Konza, Machakos County,” read part of the statement.
Aranduh said Kazungu served the Kenya Prisons Service with dedication and commitment, describing his death, together with that of his daughter, as a profound loss to the Service and their family.
He urged the family, relatives and colleagues to find strength and comfort in the memories of their loved ones and in the legacy of service and contribution Kazungu left.
“His passing, together with that of his daughter, is a profound loss to the Kenya Prisons Service and to their family,” Aranduh said.
“May their souls rest in Eternal Peace,” Aranduh said.
How the Accident Happened
The crash occurred at around 3:30 a.m. when Senior Superintendent of Prisons Alex Kazungu’s Mitsubishi Mirage collided sideways with a truck along the Nairobi-Mombasa route.
According to a report from Salama Traffic Base, referenced IAR No. 54/2026, the truck was being driven by 52-year-old Japheth Ludiema from Nairobi towards Mombasa, while Alex Kazungu was travelling in the opposite direction.
Alex Kazungu and his daughter died in the crash, while three other occupants of the Mitsubishi Mirage survived with injuries.
Rebecca Mumbi, 44, suffered a head injury, while 15-year-old Michelle Xidi Gideon complained of chest pains. Fredrick Fatani Mbitha, 23, also sustained a head injury.
The three injured occupants were rushed to Machakos Referral Hospital for treatment, while the bodies of Alex Kazungu and his daughter were preserved at the facility pending postmortem examinations.
Police towed both vehicles to Salama Police Station for inspection as investigations into the accident continue.
Who Was SSP Alex Kazungu?
At the time of his death, Kazungu was the Officer in Charge of Mombasa Remand Prison, where he was responsible for the facility’s security, administration and the welfare of inmates.
He had previously served as the Officer Commanding Shimo la Tewa Maximum Security Prison, where he was involved in the management and rehabilitation of inmates.
Beyond his career in the Kenya Prisons Service, Kazungu was also active in Christian ministry and was known as Evangelist Alex Kazungu. He regularly preached and took part in prayer meetings and evangelistic activities along the Coast.
He was associated with Amazing Word Church Maweni in Kikambala, Kilifi County, where he preached and participated in other church activities.
Kazungu also brought his Christian faith into his work within the correctional system, using ministry and counselling as part of his efforts to encourage inmates to reform and embrace a second chance in life.
