Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has responded to criticism from President William Ruto, saying he is not seeking anything for himself and is content with the opportunity he had to serve the country.
Uhuru spoke on Saturday, October 3, during the funeral service of Mwalimu Jackson Karua, the father of People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, at Mugumo Primary School in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County. He was among several political leaders who attended the ceremony.
Uhuru said he had heard people insult him and attach different labels to him, including calling him a sponsor, rebel leader, and drunkard.
“I am a person who listens. I am not looking for anything. I am satisfied, and I thank God for the opportunity He gave me.”
The former President said he was not bothered by the attacks, arguing that those insulting him were wasting their time because he had accepted his current position and was not seeking political office or personal gain.
“Even if they insult me, and I hear some people insulting me and calling me a sponsor, a rebel leader, a drunkard, or whatever they may call me tomorrow, I just look at them and laugh. You are wasting your time with someone who isn’t looking for anything,” Uhuru said.
Uhuru Says He Warned Kenyans Against Voting for Ruto
Uhuru also said he warned Kenyans against voting for William Ruto in the 2022 General Election, arguing they ignored his concerns about the direction the country was taking.
“You refused to listen to me when I told you that the road you were taking was not a good one, but you didn’t listen,” Uhuru said.
He said he hoped Kenyans would not repeat the same mistake in the 2027 General Election, because the consequences of repeating it would be greater than making the mistake in the first place.
“My wish is for Kenya to move with unity, nothing else, and it is you Kenyans who are going to decide,” he said.
He also called on opposition parties to unite and agree on a single presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Ruto Warned Leaders Against Drunken Appearances
Uhuru’s remarks come days after Ruto warned political leaders against appearing drunk at public gatherings and criticised leaders who continued discussing the 2022 General Election.
Speaking at the Mwatate Gospel Church in Taita Taveta County on September 27, Ruto said leaders should act as role models and exercise discipline in their public conduct.
“Especially those of us who are leaders, if you are a leader, you ought to be a role model; you cannot be a leader and then show up at a public meeting drunk, and then tell children not to be drunkards,” Ruto said.
Ruto’s remarks came five days after the former President questioned why his name still features in political discussions nearly four years after he left office.
Ruto also criticized leaders who continued discussing an election held four years earlier.
“The election was held four years ago, but because of being confused, you come and speak incoherent things,” Ruto said.
Ruto had earlier stepped up his criticism of opposition leaders seeking to work together under Kalonzo Musyoka.
Speaking at a rally in Taita Taveta on Saturday, September 26, 2026, the President described the leaders as a clueless group he claimed former President Uhuru Kenyatta was using.
He accused Uhuru and his allies of lacking a clear vision, plan, agenda, and policy direction, saying they relied on others to think on their behalf.
