Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei led the Commonwealth team onto the field as the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2026 officially opened with a high-profile exhibition cricket match at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
The opening event, held on Sunday, November 1, 2026, brought together Commonwealth leaders, cricketers, and local communities to kick off the summit under the theme "Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth."
His Majesty King Charles III, Head of the Commonwealth, set the proceedings in motion with a ceremonial coin toss alongside Commonwealth Secretary-General Hon. Shirley Botchwey.
The centrepiece exhibition match pitted Caribbean leaders against their counterparts from the wider Commonwealth.
Guyana President Irfaan Ali captained the Caribbean side, while Sing’Oei captained the opposing Commonwealth squad. Cricket legends Sir Vivian Richards and former England captain David Gower served as Honorary Team Managers.
“More than a sporting contest, the match stood as a visible expression of inclusion, camaraderie and mutual respect," a press release from the office of the PS said.
Leaders shared the field with emerging players, affirming the summit’s commitment to youth and to the enduring bonds that unite Commonwealth nations."
The opening festivities also coincided with Antigua and Barbuda’s 45th Independence Day celebrations, adding local resonance to the diplomatic gathering.
Meanwhile, the wider Kenyan delegation is set to arrive on the island on Monday, November 2, after 4:00 PM, led by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, as leaders transition from the opening sporting traditions to the summit's formal diplomatic agenda.
