NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 27 – Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has been named among Africa’s top 25 energy companies in a 2026 ranking by Pan African Voice, with more than 90 percent of its installed electricity generation capacity coming from renewable sources.

The ranking assessed companies based on their size, market position, strategic importance, growth and reach across the continent.

KenGen has an installed generation capacity of 1,786 megawatts, including 826MW from hydropower, 754MW from geothermal and 25.5MW from wind. The remaining capacity comes from thermal power.

Managing Director Peter Njenga said the recognition reflected the company’s investment in renewable energy, particularly geothermal power.

“Our experience, particularly in geothermal development, demonstrates that clean energy can strengthen energy security, support industry and deliver lasting economic and environmental benefits,” Njenga said.

KenGen is also seeking to expand its role in geothermal development beyond Kenya by offering technical expertise to other African countries.

In Kenya, the company is developing the Olkaria Green Energy Park, which aims to attract industrial investment by linking businesses to renewable electricity.
