The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) in conjunction with the University Of Embu School Of Law has organized a series of free legal aid clinics to provide residents with expert legal counsel and access to justice.
The initiative is aimed at enhancing legal literacy and empowering residents in understanding their constitutional rights with land disputes and succession matters constituting the main challenges confronting the community.
“Our aim is to bridge the justice gap by providing residents, particularly those who cannot afford legal representation, with professional legal guidance on various legal matters, including land disputes, succession and property ownership,” said Dr. Wilson Ngigi, Chairman of Commercial Law at the University.
Speaking on Friday during one of the public engagements in Majimbo area in Embu Town, Dr. Ngigi said the programme would not only empower residents with legal knowledge but also provide law students with practical exposure to real-life legal challenges.
Wambugu said questions raised by residents had provided valuable insights into the legal challenges facing communities while giving students an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in practical settings.
Meanwhile, Embu-based advocate Muchangi Gichugu said such forums were critical in equipping residents with legal knowledge, enabling them to understand their rights and available legal remedies.
He observed that access to legal advice was an important first step towards resolving disputes, preventing unnecessary litigation and promoting a society governed by the rule of law.
The initiative is expected to strengthen legal literacy, promote alternative dispute resolution and advance the constitutional right of every person to access justice, regardless of their financial circumstances.
Christine Nzula, President Legal Aid at the University said the initiative reflects their commitment to community engagement and using their knowledge in making a meaningful difference in the society.
