A 45-year-old businessman was shot dead during an alleged robbery at Igena Itambe along the Kenya-Tanzania border in Migori County on Wednesday night.

Police identified the deceased as Paulo Chacha Nyahaba, a businessman based in Ntimaru Township.

This is the latest such incident to happen in the area amid calls for action to tame gangs terrorizing locals.

Almost a dozen people have been shot and killed in separate robbery incidents in the area in the past year, police said.

According to police, Nyahaba was returning home from Ntimaru at about 7:30pm when he was attacked at the entrance of his homestead, located about five metres from the border.

The assailants allegedly shot him and robbed him of personal belongings, including an unspecified amount of money.

Police officers responded to the scene following the shooting.

Nyahaba sustained gunshot wounds and died while being rushed to hospital, about 50 metres from his homestead.

A physical examination of the body revealed two gunshot entry wounds—one on the neck and another on the forehead.

Investigators recovered two spent 7.62x39mm cartridges at the scene, which were secured as exhibits.

DCI officers processed and documented the scene as investigations continued to establish the circumstances of the shooting and identify the attackers.

Nyahaba’s body was moved to Wima Mortuary in Kegonga, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.

A police squad was sent to join those on the ground in pursuing the assailants.

The team said they had sent the recovered bullets for ballistic tests. They want to establish if the weapon behind the murder had been used elsewhere. The team said they believe the assailants were sneaking in the neighbouring country and efforts to get them were ongoing.

Locals protested a rise in armed crime and urged urgent measures to address the same.
