The Royal Family in Uganda has announced the death of His Majesty Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the King of Tooro.
In a statement on August 27, the family said the monarch died at approximately 10:00 p.m., describing his death as an “immeasurable loss” to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro, and Uganda.
“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of His Majesty the Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, at approximately 10:00 p.m. this evening.
This is an immeasurable loss to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro and the nation of Uganda,” read part of the statement.
Tooro King Oyo Nyimba Is Dead
The family called on the people of Tooro to remain united, calm, and prayerful as the kingdom mourns the King.
It also confirmed that the succession of the Crown will continue, saying the late King leaves behind a prince as his heir.
The royal family also said it will formally announce the heir’s identity at an appropriate time, in line with the traditions and customs of the Tooro Kingdom.
The Royal Family said it will issue a further statement detailing the funeral and mourning arrangements.
Before his death on August 27, 2026, the Tooro Kingdom had confirmed that Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV was in critical condition and receiving medical treatment in the United States.
In a statement issued amid growing reports about the King’s health, the kingdom appealed to the public to remain calm and continue praying for his recovery.
“This is to inform you that His Majesty King Oyo is currently in a critical condition,” the statement read.
Who is the Youngest King in History?
Born on April 16, 1992, to Omukama Patrick Kaboyo III and Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, Oyo ascended the throne in 1995 at the age of three following the death of his father.
His accession made him the world’s youngest reigning monarch at the time. He became the 13th ruler of the Tooro Kingdom, a traditional institution with a history spanning about 180 years.
King Oyo grew into one of Uganda’s most prominent traditional leaders, serving as a symbol of the Tooro Kingdom and its cultural heritage during his three-decade reign.
His death is expected to usher in an extended period of mourning across Tooro, with tributes likely to come from his subjects in Uganda and abroad.
He earned a degree in Business Management and International Relations from the University of Winchester in the UK.
