The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has released the list of approved Grade 11 textbooks and literary texts ahead of the Grade 11 rollout.

In a statement on October 6, KICD said the approved materials are intended to support the implementation of the Grade 11 curriculum in 2027.

“The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development is a government agency under the Ministry of Education mandated by an Act of Parliament, KICD Act No.4 of 2013, to develop, review, and approve programs, curricula, and curriculum support materials that meet international standards for Basic and Tertiary Education and Training. The Institute has released the list of approved Grade 11 textbooks and literary texts in readiness for the Grade 11 rollout next year, 2027,” read part of the statement.

KICD said anyone found using unapproved textbooks will face the full force of the law.

The institute has also issued a support channel for schools that may experience challenges with the distribution of the government-provided textbooks.

Schools that have not received the required textbooks by mid-January 2027, or that receive more copies than required based on their learner enrolment, have been advised to contact KICD for assistance and clarification.

List of Grade 11 Approved CBC Learning Materials

The list, contained in an October 2026 publication, covers learning areas under the three Senior School pathways: Arts and Sports Science, Social Sciences, and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Under the Arts and Sports Science pathway, approved materials cover Music and Dance, Theatre and Film, Fine Arts, Sports and Recreation and Physical Education. For example, the approved Music and Dance titles include Moran Music and Dance Learner’s Book Grade 11, KLB Excelling Music and Dance Learner’s Book Grade 11, Hummingbird Music and Dance Learner’s Book Grade 11 and Booklyst Senior School Master Music and Dance Learner’s Book Grade 11.

The Theatre and Film list has two approved learner’s books, including Master Theatre and Film Learner’s Book Grade 11 by Booklyst and KLB Excelling Theatre and Film Learner’s Book Grade 11. Fine Arts has four approved titles, while Sports and Recreation and Physical Education each have four.

English has 10 approved learner’s books, including titles from KLB, Oxford University Press, Booklyst, Moran, Newton Educational Resources, EAEP, Longhorn, Mentor, One Planet and Hummingbird.

Kiswahili also has 10 approved learner’s books, including Mbiu ya Kiswahili Kitabu cha Mwanafunzi Gredi ya 11, Moran Kiswahili Chanana Kitabu cha Mwanafunzi Gredi 11, Booklyst Shule Pevu Bobea Kiswahili Kitabu cha Mwanafunzi Gredi ya 11 and Kiswahili Fasaha Kitabu cha Mwanafunzi Gredi ya 11.

The Literature in English section contains both reference materials and set texts. They include The Master Builder, The Bride, The Forest No Longer Cries, The Crucial Interview, A Cowrie of Hope, Rays in the Raindrops and Senior School Poetry Companion.

The Kiswahili literature section includes titles such as Kasri la Faraja, Nyuma ya Pazia, Kivuli Kilichopinda, Sauti ya Kimya, Si Shwari, Ahadi ya Neema, Wema Waliobaki, Mwisho wa Dhiki, Binti ya Waziri and Kauli la Mwisho.

STEM Books

For STEM, KICD has approved books covering Pure Sciences, Applied Sciences and Technical Studies.

The Pure Sciences section includes Core Mathematics, Essential Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and General Science. Core Mathematics has seven approved learner’s books, while Essential Mathematics has 10. Biology has 12 approved titles and Chemistry has 11.

The approved Physics materials include books from Spotlight, Moran, Mentor, Distinction, Newton Educational Resources, Nsemia, Booklyst and KLB.

In Applied Sciences, the list covers Agriculture, Computer Studies, Home Science and Information Communication Technology. Agriculture has nine approved learners’ books, while ICT has seven.

Technical Studies include Aviation, Building Construction, Electricity, Metal Work, Power Mechanics, Woodwork, Media Technology and Marine and Fisheries.

For example, Building Construction has five approved learners’ books, while Electricity has three and Metal Work has four. Power Mechanics has three approved titles, while Woodwork has five.

Media Technology has two approved learners’ books, namely Excelling Media Technology Learner’s Book Grade 11 by KLB and One Planet Media Technology Learner’s Book Grade 11.

Marine and Fisheries has two approved titles: Doritex Marine and Fisheries Learner’s Book Grade 11 and Excelling Marine and Fisheries Technology Learner’s Book Grade 11.
