WPF and DCP politicians lead by party leaders Kalonzo Musyoka and Rigathi Gachagua during a meeting at the latter's home in Wamunyoro, Nyeri county on October 26, 2026.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua have agreed to rally behind a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the August 10, 2027, General Election.

The two leaders made the commitment during a private meeting at Gachagua’s Wamunyoro home in Nyeri County on Monday, signalling fresh efforts to consolidate the opposition around its “WANTAM” — One Term — campaign.

Kalonzo, who leads the Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) and The Ukombozi Alliance, and Gachagua agreed to bring their political bases together under one banner and reach out to like-minded parties.

Senate Minority Leader and WPF Senator Enock Wambua described the meeting as “a cordial and frank discussion on the future of Kenya”.

He said the leaders were committed to ensuring the opposition’s WANTAM agenda becomes a reality in the 2027 election.

DCP Secretary General designate and Laikipia Senator John Methu said Kalonzo’s visit did not require a formal invitation.

“Family members visit each other without notice,” Methu said.

He added that the two parties were working to build a stronger political organisation, with their leaders expected to agree on one presidential candidate to face Ruto.

“We don't want partners who say, 'If it's not him, it's Ruto.' That isn't WANTAM,” Methu said.

Kalonzo was accompanied by WPF chairman Jamleck Kamau, Secretary General Shakila Abdalla, Organising Secretary Robert Mbui, Wambua Governors Julius Malombe, Wavinya Ndeti and Mutula Kilonzo Jr, Senators Agnes Kavindu and Dan Maanzo, Makueni Woman Representative Rose Museo, party spokesperson Ndegwa Njiru and SKM Presidential Secretariat chairman Prof Geoffrey Muluvi, among others.

The opposition meeting came as Ruto continued his four-day tour of the Eastern Region, a region widely associated with Kalonzo’s political support base.

During his visit to Tseikuru in Kitui County on Monday, the President appealed to Kalonzo to support his re-election bid, recalling their political history dating back to 1992.

Addressing residents on the second day of his Ukambani tour, Ruto said he had campaigned for Kalonzo when the Wiper leader first won the Mwingi North parliamentary seat under KANU.

“Si nyinyi ni majirani ya rafiki yangu ndugu yangu Kalonzo. Mwambieni ndugu yake William Ruto alikuwa area amewatuma salamu,” Ruto told residents.

“Na mmkumbushe, mwambie 1992 mimi nilikuja hapa Mwingi kufanya kampeni ya Kalonzo. Nilikuja nikafanya kampeni ya Kalonzo hapa kwa chama ya KANU akashinda. Sasa mwambie jameni, hata mimi anikumbuke next year. Arudishe mkono.”

He also recalled that Deputy President Kithure Kindiki was part of Kalonzo’s team when the Wiper leader ran for president in 2007.

The President also took a swipe at the opposition’s 2022 running-mate selection process, warning Kalonzo that he could face another “interview” ahead of the next election.

“Mimi nataka niwaulize, walimpeleka Kalonzo kwa interview ile mwaka ingine, 2022... sema jina yako, uko na kitambulisho? Sasa namwambia my brother Steve, tena wamekupangia interview ingine hapa mbele,” he said.

In another move, Ruto directed the contractor to build the 55-kilometre Kandwia-Kyuso-Tseikuru road to extend tarmacking to the three-kilometre stretch leading to Kalonzo’s home.

“Hii barabara iko kilomita tatu ya kwenda kwa ndugu yangu Kalonzo. Pia hiyo iwekwe lami mpaka kwake nyumbani,” he directed, saying development should be delivered without discrimination.

Ruto also announced Sh20 billion for 200 kilometres of roads in Kitui County, including the 55-kilometre Twimiwa-Tseikuru-Usweni road.

He said the Nziu Bridge would be completed within a month, before Christmas, and announced plans for a new bridge at Nzito.

Other pledges included a Sh100 million market in Tseikuru, markets in Chuso, Nuu and Migwani, Sh2.5 billion to connect 23,000 households to electricity, and a Sh200 million student village at KMTC Kitui with 580 beds.

The President also warned brokers and cartels against demanding bribes or shares from investors, saying the government would protect businesses.

His warning came ahead of the planned groundbreaking on Tuesday for the Sh70 billion Devki clinker and cement plant in Ngaie, Mwingi North.

“We are going to deal with extortionists; we are going to deal with brokers, and we are going to deal with shylocks who are undermining investment in Kenya by making demands of shares and bribes,” Ruto said.
