Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s bid for the presidency in the 2027 General Election has opened the contest for his Senate seat.
Several politicians and professionals have declared interest in the seat currently being held by Sifuna, who was elected Nairobi Senator in 2022 on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket.
On September 26, 2026, Sifuna was named as the presidential candidate and party leader of the Linda Mwananchi movement.
Following Sifuna’s presidential interest, aspirants including Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, United Opposition youth leader Ken Babu, musician KRG The Don, and lawyer Cecil Miller have actively positioned themselves in the 2027 Nairobi Senator race.
Former Makadara MP Reuben Ndolo has also expressed interest, while nominated Senator Crystal Asige has been linked to the contest.
Lang’ata MP Jalang’o
Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, is among the politicians who have formally declared their intention to seek the Nairobi Senate seat.
Jalang’o announced his bid in a Radio 47 interview in February 2026, saying he chose the Senate because of its oversight role over county governments.
According to Jalang’o, his experience as Lang’ata MP had prepared him for a wider role covering Nairobi as a whole.
The legislator was elected Lang’ata MP in 2022 on an ODM ticket after building a public profile through radio and television before entering elective politics.
Jalang’o explained that he intends to remain in ODM and contest through the party, or whichever coalition ODM joins, in 2027.
“The work of an MP is oversight and management of public resources. I told myself that if we have delivered good results in Lang’ata, we can transform Nairobi as a whole by properly supervising county funds,” Jalang’o said during the Radio 47 interview.
Jalang’o has appeared alongside government-aligned politicians, while Sifuna has remained a prominent critic of the government.
President William Ruto has also publicly referred to Jalang’o as “Nairobi senator 2027”; however, the MP has emphasized that he decided to seek the seat himself.
KRG The Don
Musician, businessman, and entertainment personality William Karuga Kimani, popularly known as KRG The Don, has moved from publicly discussing his political ambitions to formally positioning himself for the Nairobi Senate race.
KRG first publicized his intention to seek the seat in 2025 and continued to discuss the bid on social media.
In September 2026, he joined former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s National Economic Development Party (NEDP), with the party move directly linked to his Senate ambitions.
“Today, I held fruitful discussions with Hon.William Karuga Kimani, popularly known as KRG, who will be seeking the Nairobi County Senate seat on our NEDP ticket,” said Sonko in a statement dated September 23.
KRG announced the political move on social media, describing it as the beginning of a new political journey.
His political messaging has focused on youth participation and economic opportunities.
Cecil Miller
The official campaign website for Advocate Cecil describes him as an aspiring Senator for Nairobi City County in 2027 and an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
Miller has served as chair of the Law Society of Kenya Coast Region for three years and is associated with the Roots Party of Kenya.
Cecil’s focus areas as a Nairobi Senator aspirant include youth skills development, workers’ and gig-economy rights, access to justice, ease of doing business, and healthcare.
Ken Babu
A youth leader within the United Opposition, Ken Babu also joined the Nairobi Senate contest after declaring his bid in March 2026 in a public interview.
His campaign centers on accountability, youth empowerment and oversight of Nairobi County resources.
During his campaign, Babu has argued that Nairobi’s economic importance has not translated into adequate services for many residents, citing unemployment, insecurity, planning, and urban challenges.
He has also proposed greater scrutiny of county procurement and development projects as part of the Senate’s oversight responsibilities.
Reuben Ndolo
Former Makadara MP Reuben Ndolo is among the prominent political figures interested in becoming the next Nairobi Senator.
Ndolo represented Makadara in Parliament before becoming president of the Kenya Professional Boxing Commission.
On October 3, 2026, Ndolo said residents had told him that, after serving as an MP, he should move to the Senate, and he declared a formal candidacy.
Crystal Asige
Nominated Senator Crystal Asige has also been mentioned in the succession debate. Asige is currently a nominated senator representing persons with disabilities and special-interest groups.
She is also the Secretary General of the Kenya Disabled Parliamentarians Association and chairs the disability caucus within the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association.
However, Asige has not formally declared that she will contest the elected Nairobi Senate seat.
Former Aspirants No Longer in the Nairobi Senator Race
Lawyer Danstan Omari initially declared his intention to contest the seat in January 2025.
However, Omari withdrew from the Senate contest in January 2026 after consultations, saying he would focus on his legal career.
Content creator and comedian Wilson Muirani Gathoni, popularly known as Jaymo Ule Msee, also previously announced a Nairobi Senate bid but later withdrew from active politics.
Additionally, Robert Alai was also linked to the Senate contest, but he changed his political plans to focus on the Dagoretti North parliamentary seat.
